Single Malt Cask Strength Batch No 014 10YO (((Bottled 2021)))

by Laphroaig
Whisky / Whiskey Vintage: NV 📍 Islay, Scotland

⏳ Drinking Window

As a distilled spirit, this bottle does not mature further in glass and is ready to be enjoyed immediately. Unopened, it will preserve its exceptional character indefinitely. Once opened, it is best enjoyed within 1 to 3 years to experience its full aromatic complexity before gradual oxidation begins to soften its fiery cask-strength profile.

🍽️ Food & Wine Pairings

Fresh raw oysters, strong blue cheeses like Roquefort or Stilton, and slow-smoked barbecue beef brisket.

✨ Technical Specifications

Hailing from the rugged, wind-swept south coast of Islay, Laphroaig has been crafting its famously polarizing, deeply peated single malt Scotch whisky since 1815. The Cask Strength Batch 014, aged for 10 years in seasoned ex-bourbon barrels and bottled in 2021, represents the distillery's signature style in its most unadulterated form. Laphroaig's legendary character is defined by its hand-cut peat from the Glenmachrie peat moss, which imparts a unique medicinal, iodine-rich, and seaweed-forward smoke profile, balanced by the sweet vanilla and toasted oak notes of American white oak. Legend has it that during US Prohibition, Laphroaig was legally imported as a 'medicinal spirit' due to its intense, therapeutic iodine aroma—a testament to its uncompromising and historical character.

🍾 About the Producer

Established in 1815 along the rugged south coast of Islay by Donald and Alexander Johnston, Laphroaig represents one of Scotland's most distinctive and unapologetic single malt whisky profiles. Perched right against the Atlantic shore near Port Ellen, the distillery draws peaty, soft water from the Kilbride Stream and maintains traditional floor maltings that provide a fraction of its barley, heavily kilned over hand-cut Islay peat rich in moss and maritime heather. Fermentation and distillation across asymmetric copper pot stills yield a raw spirit characterized by striking medicinal, phenolic, iodine, and maritime brine elements. Primary maturation in seasoned ex-bourbon barrels, bolstered in coastal dunnage warehouses, tempers this intense smokiness with creamy vanilla, sweet oak, and orchard fruit. Benchmark releases like the flagship 10 Year Old, Quarter Cask, annual Càirdeas bottlings, and the venerable 25 Year Old Cask Strength epitomize Islay's elemental terroir and artisanal distilling heritage.
