By utilizing two distinct types of wort—cloudy and semi-cloudy—alongside a combination of traditional and expanded fermentation times, the distillers have amplified Laphroaig's signature medicinal peat smoke while coaxing out unexpected layers of tropical fruit and sweet, spicy malt. Founded in 1815 by the Johnston brothers, Laphroaig is legendary for its uncompromisingly bold, phenolic character, deeply influenced by the salty sea air and local peat beds of the Kilbride Stream.
