Laphroaig's 'Strong Characters' series debuts with a tribute to Donald Johnston, who co-founded the distillery in 1815 and met a tragic, legendary end by falling into a vat of boiling distillery wort in 1847. This extraordinary 33-year-old single malt captures the resilient spirit of Islay. Distilled on the rugged south coast of the island, it utilizes Laphroaig's signature peat-fired malt and soft water from the Kilbride Dam. Over more than three decades of maturation in American oak and European oak Sherry casks, the aggressive, medicinal peat smoke of its youth has softened into a complex tapestry of maritime brine, tropical fruits, beeswax, and rich, sweet spices, representing the pinnacle of Islay craftsmanship.
🍾 wine.about_producer
Established in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston, Laphroaig Distillery is situated on the rugged south coast of the Isle of Islay, Scotland. Celebrated globally for its distinctively bold, peaty, and medicinal character, the distillery remains one of the few that still utilizes traditional floor maltings to dry its barley over local, hand-cut Islay peat. This artisanal heritage, paired with distillation in unique copper pot stills and maturation primarily in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, defines its legendary portfolio, which includes the iconic 10 Year Old, Quarter Cask, and highly coveted aged limited editions.
