Laphroaig, established in 1815 on the rugged south coast of Islay, is legendary for its uncompromisingly smoky, medicinal, and maritime character. This expression, distilled at Laphroaig and matured for 15 years before being selected by independent bottler Hunter Laing for 'The First Editions' series from Cask 12787, represents a rare, single-cask snapshot of the distillery's spirit. Legend has it that Laphroaig's distinctive iodine and seaweed notes were so pronounced that during American Prohibition, it was legally imported into the United States as a 'medicinal spirit' because no customs official believed it could be drunk for mere pleasure. The unique profile is derived from hand-cut Islay peat from the Glenmachrie moss, rich in heather and seaweed, combined with traditional floor maltings and seaside maturation where the damp Atlantic air breathes through the warehouse walls. This independent bottling showcases the raw, un-chillfiltered beauty of a single cask, offering a nuanced, oak-influenced variation on the classic peat-heavy style.

Laphroaig blev grundlagt i 1815 af brødrene Donald og Alexander Johnston på den rå sydkyst af Isle of Islay og regnes i dag for et af Skotlands mest ikoniske og karakterfulde single malt-destillerier. Destilleriet er berømt for sin kompromisløse, medicinske og maritime profil og holder de stolte håndværkstraditioner i hævd ved selv at håndstikke lokal Islay-tørv fra Glenmachrie samt drive egne, historiske maltgulve. Kombinationen af koldrøgning og blødt, tørveholdigt vand fra Kilbride Reservoir giver en umiskendelig spiritus, der er rig på noter af tang, jod og markant tørverøg. Destilleriet hører i dag under Suntory Global Spirits og har siden 1994 kunnet pryde sig med et prestigefyldt Royal Warrant som kongelig hofleverandør.
