✨ wine.spec_sheet

Deep in the heart of the Middle Mosel, the Bernkasteler Lay vineyard rises steeply from the riverbanks, its name derived from the old local dialect word 'Lay', meaning slate. This vineyard is characterized by heavy, weathered blue Devonian slate soils, which impart a distinctively cool, flinty minerality and structural elegance to the Riesling vines. Under the meticulous stewardship of Markus Molitor—famed for his uncompromising quality standards and traditional philosophy—the grapes for this Auslese are harvested entirely by hand through multiple selective passes. Fermented spontaneously with wild yeasts in traditional large oak casks (Fuder), the wine represents a masterful expression of late-harvest Riesling. Depending on the capsule color (white for dry, green for off-dry, and gold for sweet), Molitor's Auslese showcases a brilliant tension between ripe stone fruits, exotic botrytis complexity, and a vibrating, slate-driven acidity that has defined the region's winemaking heritage for centuries.

Taking over his family's estate in 1984 at just twenty years old, Markus Molitor set out to restore the Mosel region's historic prestige through uncompromising quality and traditional craftsmanship. Based at the historic Haus Klosterberg in Bernkastel-Kues, the winery meticulously farms steep, slate-rich vineyards across the Mosel and Saar, utilizing extremely late hand-harvesting and spontaneous fermentation in neutral oak Fuder casks. Molitor is globally renowned for his precise, mineral-driven Rieslings—distinguished by white, green, and gold capsules indicating dryness levels—as well as his structured, elegant Spätburgunder. This obsessive dedication to terroir has earned the estate numerous perfect 100-point scores, cementing its status as an icon of German winemaking.
