Born in 1986 as a pioneering precursor to the modern 'high expression' Rioja movement, Barón de Chirel represents a landmark chapter in the storied history of Marqués de Riscal—a bodega founded in 1858 that helped shape the destiny of the region. This landmark cuvée is crafted only in exceptional vintages from extremely old vines, some over a century old, nestled in the clay-limestone soils of Elciego within Rioja Alavesa. The blend is anchored by majestic Tempranillo and complemented by a selection of other varieties, including historic Cabernet Sauvignon vines which Riscal has cultivated since the 19th century. Fermented in small oak vats and aged in fine French oak barrels, the wine marries the traditional elegance, balsamic complexity, and fine-grained tannins of Rioja with a contemporary intensity, dark fruit concentration, and deep mineral soul.

Founded in 1858 by Camilo Hurtado de Amézaga, Marqués de Riscal is one of the oldest and most pioneering wineries in Spain's Rioja region, situated in the historic town of Elciego. The estate revolutionized Spanish viticulture by introducing Bordeaux-style vinification and barrel aging techniques, earning worldwide acclaim as the first non-French wine to win the Diploma of Honor at the Exhibition of Bordeaux in 1895. In addition to its legendary, structured Rioja Reserva and Gran Reserva Tempranillo expressions, the bodega expanded into Castilla y León in the 1970s, playing an instrumental role in establishing the Rueda appellation with benchmark Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc wines. Today, Marqués de Riscal seamlessly fuses classical winemaking mastery with avant-garde innovation, epitomized by its iconic Frank Gehry-designed winery complex.
