Viña Morandé's exploration of Pinot Noir in the cool-climate zones of the Aconcagua region, particularly the Casablanca Valley, represents a landmark chapter in Chilean viticulture. Founder Pablo Morandé famously defied conventional wisdom in the late 1980s by planting vines in these chilly, ocean-influenced valleys, which were previously deemed too cold for grape growing. This Pinot Noir showcases the triumph of that vision. Grown on ancient granitic soils layered with clay, the vines benefit from morning fogs and cooling breezes blowing off the Pacific Ocean, slowing ripening and preserving the grape's delicate aromatics and bright acidity. In the cellar, Morandé combines traditional open-top fermentation with modern minimal-intervention techniques, often utilizing large neutral oak foudres or concrete eggs to respect the purity of the fruit. The resulting wine is characterized by its bright red cherry and raspberry notes, complex undertones of damp earth and wild herbs, and a silky, elegant structure that redefines South American Pinot Noir.
