Niepoort's Batuta is a masterpiece of tension and elegance, named after the conductor's baton to signify the perfect harmony Dirk Niepoort sought to achieve in the glass. First released in 1999, Batuta challenged the late-1990s trend of over-extracted, jammy Douro reds by focusing instead on freshness, restraint, and terroir expression. The wine is sourced primarily from the north-facing Quinta do Carril vineyard, where centenarian field-blend vines—including Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Rufete, and Tinta Amarela—grow in poor schist soils at high altitudes. This northern exposure protects the grapes from the intense Douro heat, preserving vital acidity. In the cellar, the grapes undergo a remarkably long but extremely gentle maceration with minimal extraction, followed by aging in mostly used French oak casks. The result is a wine of profound depth, mineral precision, and a Burgundian sensibility that showcases the noble, quiet side of the Douro Valley.

Niepoort blev grundlagt i 1842 af Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort og er et ikonisk, uafhængigt familieejet hus med base i Vila Nova de Gaia og dybe historiske rødder i Portugals Douro-dal. Huset har i over et århundrede været berømt for sine skelsættende Colheita- og Vintage Ports, men gennemgik en dynamisk renæssance under femtegenerations-visionæren Dirk Niepoort, der banede vejen for den moderne æra af uforstærkede Douro-bordvine i absolut topklasse. Med en kompromisløs forkærlighed for gamle vinmarker med field blends, minimal intervention i vinfremstillingen og et unikt terroirudtryk skaber vinhuset hyldede tørre vine som Batuta, Charme og Redoma sideløbende med nyere projekter i Bairrada og Dão. I dag står Niepoort som et globalt beundret pejlemærke for portugisisk vinkunst, der ubesværet forener en tidløs portvinsarv med innovative, elegante og mineralske bordvine.
