Niepoort's Garrafeira is one of the rarest and most legendary styles in the world of Port, a category almost single-handedly preserved by the Niepoort family. It represents a fascinating hybrid of aging techniques: the wine is first aged in wood for a short period before being transferred into large glass demijohns, known as garrafeiras, which hold between 8 and 11 liters. Here, the wine undergoes a slow, reductive aging process in glass for decades—sometimes over a century. The 'Lalique' designation refers to an extraordinary collaboration featuring Niepoort's historic 1863 Garrafeira, which was aged in wood, transferred to glass demijohns in 1905, and eventually bottled in five bespoke Lalique crystal decanters. Made from a traditional field blend of ancient Douro grape varieties, this wine offers an ethereal combination of deep, oxidative complexity and a preserved, vibrant freshness that only glass aging can achieve.
