✨ wine.spec_sheet

Hailing from the cool, maritime-influenced hills of Bairrada, Niepoort's Lagar Baixo is a masterful tribute to the region's signature red grape, Baga. Produced at the Quinta de Baixo estate—which Dirk Niepoort acquired in 2012 to champion the limestone terroirs of the region—this wine represents a lighter, highly elegant, and precise expression of Baga. The grapes are sourced from old vines grown on classic clay-limestone soils and are fermented in traditional open stone lagares (hence the name 'Lagar Baixo') with a significant portion of whole bunches. Aging takes place in large, neutral wooden foudres rather than small barriques, preserving the grape's bright red fruit, high natural acidity, and chalky minerality, resulting in a wine that beautifully bridges the rustic soul of Bairrada with the ethereal elegance of fine Burgundy or Barolo.
