Quinta de Baixo, acquired by Dirk Niepoort in 2012, represents a landmark chapter in the Bairrada region's modern renaissance. Located in the calcareous-clay hills of Cantanhede, the estate is dedicated to showcasing the incredible nobility of the Baga grape under a cool, Atlantic-influenced climate. While 'Charme' is historically Niepoort's legendary, elegant Douro red, the philosophy of extreme elegance, light extraction, and pre-phylloxera-like finesse is beautifully translated to Quinta de Baixo's Bairrada reds. Fermented in traditional lagares with minimal extraction and aged in large, neutral wooden casks, these wines defy the rustic, highly tannic stereotypes of Bairrada. Instead, they present a pale, ethereal ruby hue, vibrant acidity, and deep chalky minerality, echoing the great Pinot Noirs of Burgundy while remaining unmistakably Portuguese.

Established in 1842 by Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort, Niepoort has evolved from a venerable family-run Port shipper into one of the most visionary and influential forces in Portuguese viticulture. Guided by fifth-generation iconoclast Dirk Niepoort alongside his son Daniel, the estate has redefined Douro winemaking by championing terroir-driven, lower-alcohol dry table wines alongside monumental fortified expressions. Sourcing fruit from steep, schistose terraces in the Cima Corgo as well as granitic and clay-limestone soils across Dão, Bairrada, Vinho Verde, and the volcanic slopes of Pico, viticulture prioritizes biodiversity, old field blends, and biodynamic principles. Winemaking emphasizes minimal cellar intervention, whole-bunch fermentations, and traditional foot-treading in granite lagares.
