In 1991, Dirk Niepoort shook the traditionalist foundations of the Douro Valley by releasing the inaugural vintage of Redoma Tinto. At a time when the region was almost exclusively celebrated for its sweet, fortified Ports, Redoma emerged as a pioneering statement of the Douro's potential for world-class dry still wines. The name 'Redoma'—meaning a protective glass dome or bell jar—hints at the wine's initial tight, protective structure that slowly unfurls to reveal its deep complexity. Sourced from field blends of ancient vines, often over 60 years old, clinging to steep, schistous slopes on the right bank of the Douro River, this wine captures the wild, untamed essence of the valley. Traditional grape varieties like Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca, Rufete, and Tinta Roriz are co-fermented, often with a significant proportion of stems, and aged in French oak casks. The result is a deeply mineral, structured, and authentic expression of the Douro, balancing rustic intensity with Dirk's signature elegance and vibrant acidity.
