Secundum Vintage Port represents a fascinating chapter in Niepoort's storied history, conceived by Dirk Niepoort to offer a Vintage Port that is approachable and expressive in its youth while maintaining the structure to age gracefully for decades. The name 'Secundum'—Latin for 'second' or 'favorable'—hints at its role as a sibling to the house's classic Vintage Port. Sourced from field blends of ancient, low-yielding vines in the rugged Cima Corgo subregion of the Douro Valley, the grapes (including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz) are traditionally foot-trodden in granite lagares. This hands-on, ancestral method ensures gentle extraction of deep color and velvety tannins. Aged in large wooden vats to preserve its vibrant fruit character before being bottled unfiltered, Secundum showcases a harmonious balance of dark fruit intensity, spice, and elegant minerality.
