Niepoort's 'Senior' Tawny Port is a masterclass in the art of wood aging, representing a beautiful bridge between youthful ruby styles and fully matured aged tawnies. The name 'Senior' pays homage to the traditional, distinguished character of this blend, which spends an average of seven to eight years maturing in small, old oak casks (known as pipas) in the historic lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia. This extended contact with wood and controlled oxidation transforms the deep red fruit of the Douro's traditional grape varieties—including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz—into a wine of brick-red hue with complex aromas of dried fruits, nuts, and subtle spices. Niepoort's commitment to traditional winemaking, including partial foot-treading in granite lagares, ensures that even this accessible Tawny retains the structure, elegance, and depth that define the house style.
