Niepoort's Tawny Port is a masterclass in balancing youthful fruit with the subtle, oxidative complexity that defines the tawny style. Sourced from low-yielding vineyards carved into the steep schist slopes of the Cima Corgo subregion in the Douro Valley, this wine is crafted from a traditional field blend of indigenous grapes, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz. After fermentation is arrested with grape spirit, the wine is transported to the historic, humid cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia. Here, it undergoes aging for an average of three to three and a half years in small, seasoned oak casks known as 'pipas'. This deliberate contact with wood and controlled exposure to oxygen coaxes out a brilliant brick-red hue and transforms the primary dark fruit notes into a refined tapestry of dried plums, orange peel, and subtle nuttiness, all while preserving the vibrant acidity and freshness that is the signature of the Niepoort house style.

Niepoort blev grundlagt i 1842 af Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort og er et ikonisk, uafhængigt familieejet hus med base i Vila Nova de Gaia og dybe historiske rødder i Portugals Douro-dal. Huset har i over et århundrede været berømt for sine skelsættende Colheita- og Vintage Ports, men gennemgik en dynamisk renæssance under femtegenerations-visionæren Dirk Niepoort, der banede vejen for den moderne æra af uforstærkede Douro-bordvine i absolut topklasse. Med en kompromisløs forkærlighed for gamle vinmarker med field blends, minimal intervention i vinfremstillingen og et unikt terroirudtryk skaber vinhuset hyldede tørre vine som Batuta, Charme og Redoma sideløbende med nyere projekter i Bairrada og Dão. I dag står Niepoort som et globalt beundret pejlemærke for portugisisk vinkunst, der ubesværet forener en tidløs portvinsarv med innovative, elegante og mineralske bordvine.
