Penfolds Bin 138 draws inspiration from the classic southern Rhône blend, adapted to the unique terroir of South Australia's Barossa Valley. First released with the 1992 vintage under the name 'Old Vine Barossa Valley', this wine was created by Penfolds to showcase the exceptional quality of heritage Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro (Mourvèdre) vines, some of which are over a century old. Unlike many of Penfolds' heavily oaked flagships, Bin 138 is matured in seasoned French and American oak hogsheads to allow the vibrant, spicy fruit characteristics of the old vines to take center stage. Each component brings a distinct element: Grenache offers perfume and sweet spice, Shiraz provides rich plum fruit and structure, while Mataro contributes earthy complexity and savory depth.
