First released in 2009, the wine takes its name from Cellar 23 at the historic Magill Estate, where it was traditionally matured. While Penfolds is legendary for its monumental, structured Cabernets and Shirazes, Bin 23 showcases the house's capability to master the notoriously temperamental Pinot Noir grape. Sourced primarily from the cool, high-altitude vineyards of the Adelaide Hills, the fruit benefits from the region's chilly nights and misty mornings, which preserve the grape's delicate aromatics and bright acidity. Winemakers employ thoughtful techniques, including partial whole-cluster fermentation and maturation in French oak barriques, to craft a Pinot Noir that is distinctly Penfolds—rich, textural, and complex, with a beautiful interplay of red cherry, savory spice, and earthy undertones.

Penfolds blev grundlagt i 1844 af dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold og hans hustru Mary på Magill Estate i South Australia og er i dag et af Australiens ældste og mest ikoniske vinhuse. Ejendommen opnåede legendarisk international anerkendelse i 1950'erne under den visionære chefvinmager Max Schubert, som skabte Penfolds Grange og revolutionerede landets vinfremstilling. Drevet af en berømt filosofi om at blande på tværs af regioner og druesorter udvælger Penfolds enestående druer fra historiske australske terroirs – herunder Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale og Coonawarra – samt fra udvalgte internationale topområder.
