Often affectionately dubbed 'Baby Grange' because components of the wine are matured in the same American oak barrels that held the previous vintage of Penfolds' flagship Grange, Bin 389 is a legendary Australian red first crafted in 1960 by the visionary winemaker Max Schubert. This masterfully structured blend exemplifies Penfolds' historic philosophy of multi-regional sourcing, drawing premium fruit from celebrated South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, and Coonawarra. By marrying the structural backbone, cassis notes, and fine-grained tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon with the fleshy, spiced plum richness of Shiraz, Bin 389 helped define the classic Australian blend. Matured for approximately 12 months in American oak hogsheads, it is a wine of immense power, complexity, and historical significance, representing a bridge between Penfolds' rich heritage and modern winemaking excellence.
