The Penfolds Cellar Reserve range was initiated in the late 1990s as an ongoing series of alternative, boutique wines that allow the winemaking team to experiment with non-traditional grape varieties and innovative cellar techniques. Sourced from premium vineyards in South Australia, particularly the Barossa Valley, this Sangiovese is a brilliant showcase of how the classic Tuscan grape thrives in Australian soils. Unlike the traditional, heavily oaked Penfolds style, this wine is crafted to emphasize Sangiovese's natural high acidity, dusty tannins, and savory complexity. It is typically fermented in open-top fermenters and matured in seasoned French oak barriques, resulting in a lively, medium-bodied red that beautifully marries bright cherry fruit with rustic, earthy undertones.

Penfolds blev grundlagt i 1844 af dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold og hans hustru Mary på Magill Estate i South Australia og er i dag et af Australiens ældste og mest ikoniske vinhuse. Ejendommen opnåede legendarisk international anerkendelse i 1950'erne under den visionære chefvinmager Max Schubert, som skabte Penfolds Grange og revolutionerede landets vinfremstilling. Drevet af en berømt filosofi om at blande på tværs af regioner og druesorter udvælger Penfolds enestående druer fra historiske australske terroirs – herunder Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale og Coonawarra – samt fra udvalgte internationale topområder.
