Penfolds' legacy is deeply intertwined with fortified winemaking, a tradition that predates their famous dry reds. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, fortified wines were the cornerstone of the estate, originally prescribed as tonics by founder Dr. Christopher Penfold. The 'Father' Grand Tawny pays homage to this rich heritage. Crafted using a solera-style system of fractional blending, components of classic red varieties are aged in seasoned oak casks for an average of ten years in the warm cellars of South Australia. This slow, oxidative maturation coaxes out luscious notes of dried stone fruits, toasted nuts, praline, and subtle spice, resulting in a velvety, complex tawny that represents a living link to Penfolds' historic past.

Penfolds blev grundlagt i 1844 af dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold og hans hustru Mary på Magill Estate i South Australia og er i dag et af Australiens ældste og mest ikoniske vinhuse. Ejendommen opnåede legendarisk international anerkendelse i 1950'erne under den visionære chefvinmager Max Schubert, som skabte Penfolds Grange og revolutionerede landets vinfremstilling. Drevet af en berømt filosofi om at blande på tværs af regioner og druesorter udvælger Penfolds enestående druer fra historiske australske terroirs – herunder Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale og Coonawarra – samt fra udvalgte internationale topområder. Vinhuset er verdenskendt for kraftfulde, upåklageligt strukturerede og særdeles lagringsværdige vine anført af flagskibet Grange, Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon og den berømmede Bin-serie.
