Penfolds' legacy is deeply rooted in the production of fortified wines, which dominated Australian winemaking for over a century. The Great Grandfather Rare Tawny represents the pinnacle of this tradition. Originally created in 1994 to celebrate Penfolds' 150th anniversary, this luxury tawny is a blend of the finest batches of Grandfather Tawny that have been set aside for additional aging in oak casks. Utilizing a solera-like system of fractional blending, the components of this wine achieve an average age of over 30 years. The result is an extraordinarily complex, viscous, and concentrated fortified wine, showing the profound influence of extended wood aging in the warm cellars of South Australia.

Penfolds blev grundlagt i 1844 af dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold og hans hustru Mary på Magill Estate i South Australia og er i dag et af Australiens ældste og mest ikoniske vinhuse. Ejendommen opnåede legendarisk international anerkendelse i 1950'erne under den visionære chefvinmager Max Schubert, som skabte Penfolds Grange og revolutionerede landets vinfremstilling. Drevet af en berømt filosofi om at blande på tværs af regioner og druesorter udvælger Penfolds enestående druer fra historiske australske terroirs – herunder Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale og Coonawarra – samt fra udvalgte internationale topområder.
