Born from an internal project initiated in 1995, the 'Red Winemaking Trial' (RWT) was designed to redefine Barossa Valley Shiraz. While Penfolds' flagship Grange represents a multi-regional blend matured in American oak, RWT was conceived as its stylistic antithesis: a single-region Barossa Shiraz aged exclusively in fine French oak hogsheads. First released with the 1997 vintage, this wine immediately captivated collectors with its opulent, fleshy texture, vibrant blue fruit aromatics, and velvety tannins. In 2016, Penfolds officially designated it 'Bin 798' to integrate it into their classic bin numbering system, though it remains affectionately known by its trial moniker. It stands as a masterclass in how French oak can frame and elevate the natural opulence of Barossa's old-vine Shiraz.

Established in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold at Magill Estate in the Mount Lofty foothills, Penfolds represents one of the foundational cornerstones of Australian fine wine. Over nearly two centuries, the house evolved from crafting fortified tonics to pioneering modern multi-regional and multi-vineyard blending across South Australia's premier terroirs, including the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra. Soils span from rich terra rossa over limestone to weathered ironstone and alluvial clays under warm Mediterranean climates tempered by maritime breezes. Under the long-term stewardship of Chief Winemaker Peter Gago, the house adheres to Sustainable Winegrowing Australia standards while preserving an unmistakable house style defined by meticulous fruit classification, submerged-cap fermentation, and structured maturation in American and French oak hogsheads.
