Tinta Negra has long been the unsung hero of Madeira, stepping in to sustain the island's historic wine industry after the devastating phylloxera epidemic of the late 19th century. While historically blended or left unnamed on labels, under the master craftsmanship of Pereira D'Oliveira, this versatile grape is elevated to an art form. This sweet (Doce) expression is sourced from grapes grown on steep, volcanic terraces carved into the island's dramatic cliffs. Aged traditionally in seasoned oak casks using the canteiro system—where the wine is gently warmed by the natural heat of the sun in the winery's upper lofts—it undergoes a slow, deliberate oxidation. This process coaxes out a luscious tapestry of dried figs, dark caramel, molasses, and warm baking spices, all brilliantly balanced by Madeira's trademark electric acidity.
