The Evel brand is one of Portugal's most historic and enduring wine labels, first registered by Real Companhia Velha in 1913. Its name is a clever anagram of the Portuguese word 'leve' (meaning light), originally conceived to highlight a style of Douro red that was remarkably elegant, fresh, and easy to drink compared to the heavy, rustic table wines of the era. The Evel Reserva Tinto represents a more structured, premium evolution of this historic philosophy. Sourced from select high-altitude vineyards in the Douro, such as Quinta do Casal da Granja and Quinta de Cidro, the grapes benefit from cooler night temperatures that preserve vital acidity. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, resulting in a harmonious marriage of intense dark forest fruits, subtle oak spice, and velvety tannins, all while maintaining the signature freshness that has defined the brand for over a century.

Founded in 1756 by Royal Charter of King José I under the guidance of the Marquis of Pombal, Real Companhia Velha is the oldest and most historic wine enterprise in Portugal. With its storied maturation cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia and sprawling estate vineyards across the Douro Valley, the company was central to the creation of the world's first officially demarcated wine region.
