✨ Technical Specifications
The Wehlener Sonnenuhr, or 'Sundial of Wehlen,' is one of the Mosel's most legendary vineyards, named after the historic sundial erected in 1842 by Jodocus Prüm to guide vineyard workers. Selbach-Oster's two-star (2*) Auslese represents an elite selection of highly ripe, botrytis-affected Riesling grapes hand-harvested from the steepest, blue slate-rich parcels of this grand site. Fermented naturally with indigenous yeasts and aged in traditional large oak Fuder casks, this wine marries the intense, honeyed concentration of noble rot with the vibrant, electric acidity and crystalline minerality characteristic of the Mosel. It is a masterclass in tension, balancing rich notes of candied peach, apricot, and petrol with a laser-like focus.
🍾 About the Producer
Steeped in centuries of family winemaking tradition along the dramatic slate slopes of the Middle Mosel, Weingut Selbach-Oster represents one of Germany's most distinguished Riesling estates. Managed by Johannes Selbach and his family, the estate meticulously tends prized, steep vineyard parcels across legendary grand cru sites including the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Schlossberg, and Wehlener Sonnenuhr, home to significant plantings of ancient, ungrafted vines. Cellar practices emphasize minimal intervention, relying on native yeast fermentations and maturation in traditional large oak Fuder casks to capture pure terroir expression and vibrant acidity. Selbach-Oster is celebrated worldwide for its benchmark, slate-driven Rieslings spanning crisp, mineral-rich Kabinett and Spätlese bottlings to profound, luscious single-vineyard Auslese and rare Eiswein expressions.
