โจ Technical Specifications
The Zeltinger Sonnenuhr (sundial) vineyard is one of the Mosel's most iconic grand cru sites, named after the historic sundial erected in 1620 by Abbot Jodokus Bodemann to help vineyard workers track their day. Selbach-Oster's Riesling Kabinett from this legendary slope is a masterclass in tension and terroir. Grown on steep, weathered blue Devonian slate soils, the 100% Riesling grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts in traditional, large oak Fuder casks. This minimal-intervention approach coaxes out a feather-light yet intensely aromatic profile, defined by crunchy green apple, white peach, and a piercing, salty slate minerality that perfectly balances the wine's delicate, off-dry sweetness.
๐พ About the Producer
Steeped in centuries of family winemaking tradition along the dramatic slate slopes of the Middle Mosel, Weingut Selbach-Oster represents one of Germany's most distinguished Riesling estates. Managed by Johannes Selbach and his family, the estate meticulously tends prized, steep vineyard parcels across legendary grand cru sites including the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Schlossberg, and Wehlener Sonnenuhr, home to significant plantings of ancient, ungrafted vines. Cellar practices emphasize minimal intervention, relying on native yeast fermentations and maturation in traditional large oak Fuder casks to capture pure terroir expression and vibrant acidity. Selbach-Oster is celebrated worldwide for its benchmark, slate-driven Rieslings spanning crisp, mineral-rich Kabinett and Spรคtlese bottlings to profound, luscious single-vineyard Auslese and rare Eiswein expressions.
