Established in Moscow in 1864 by Pyotr Arsenievich Smirnov, Smirnoff transformed vodka production by pioneering the systematic use of charcoal filtration to produce a spirit of unprecedented purity. Following the nationalization of the distillery during the Bolshevik Revolution, Vladimir Smirnov fled Russia and revived the brand in Europe during the 1920s, adapting the moniker to its French spelling before rights spread across the Atlantic. Today owned by Diageo, Smirnoff is distilled and blended globally using high-grade neutral grain spirit—most commonly continuous column-distilled corn or wheat—diluted with demineralized water. The core house style centers on triple distillation followed by ten cycles of rigorous filtration through selected hardwood charcoal columns.
