The 2022 vintage in Bolgheri was defined by an intensely hot, arid summer that exerted severe water stress on the vines, though maritime breezes and targeted canopy management mitigated excessive sun exposure. Critical mid-August rain showers relieved drought pressure and revitalized the vines, enabling Merlot to achieve complete phenolic maturity while preserving crisp acidity in the Cabernet Sauvignon. The resulting wine shows generous dark fruit concentration framed by plush, rounded tannins rather than austere grip. Entering an attractive drinking window from 2026 onwards, it possesses the structural integrity to cellar comfortably through 2034.

The 2022 Guidalberto is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, sourced from estate vineyards in the Bolgheri DOC of Tuscany. The soils here are characterized by a mix of limestone, clay, and stony alluvial deposits. The 2022 growing season in Bolgheri was marked by a hot, dry summer, which was mitigated by late-summer rains that allowed for optimal phenolic ripeness. The wine was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and aged for 15 months in a combination of French and American oak barriques, followed by three months of refinement in the bottle.
🍾 About the Producer
Situated along the Tyrrhenian coast in the Tuscan Maremma, Tenuta San Guido is the birthplace of the modern Super Tuscan phenomenon. Founded when Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta recognized an affinity between Bolgheri’s gravelly soils and Bordeaux's Graves, the estate planted its first Cabernet vines near Castiglioncello di Bolgheri in 1944. Sassicaia remained a strictly private family vintage until its historic commercial debut with the 1968 vintage. Spanning roughly 2,500 hectares of biodiverse woodlands, wildlife sanctuaries, and thoroughbred pastures, only approximately 100 hectares are under vine. The vineyards thrive under maritime breezes and intense light, rooted in stony, limestone- and clay-rich alluvial terraces. Crafted predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Cabernet Franc and aged in French oak barriques, Sassicaia achieved the unprecedented distinction of its own standalone single-estate appellation, DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia. Alongside Guidalberto and Le Difese, the estate's benchmark reds are celebrated worldwide for their aristocratic structure, savory cassis and cedar aromatics, and extraordinary cellar longevity.
