The mythic Scharzhofberg hill is widely regarded as one of the greatest white wine vineyards on Earth. Situated in a side valley of the Saar, this steep, south-facing slope is defined by its weathered Devonian slate soils mixed with iron-rich clay. Originally planted by the Romans and later cultivated for centuries by the Benedictine monks of St. Mary's Convent in Trier, the vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate where cool Saar winds preserve a vibrant, electric acidity. Van Volxem's Scharzhofberger Grosses Gew$chs (GG) is crafted from ancient, low-yielding vines. Spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in traditional large oak fuder casks, this dry masterpiece showcases the legendary vineyard's signature salty minerality, wild herbal notes, and deep, textured complexity.

With viticultural roots reaching back to Roman antiquity and an 18th-century Jesuit monastery, Weingut Van Volxem is a historic estate situated in Wiltingen along the steep slopes of the Saar in Germany's Mosel region. The estate experienced a dramatic renaissance when Roman Niewodniczanski acquired it in 1999, dedicating the estate to restoring the Saar's historic reputation for world-class, dry-style wines crafted with artisanal precision. Working with venerable old vines across premier Grand Cru terroirs—including iconic sites like Scharzhofberger, Wiltinger Gottesfuss, and Kanzemer Altenberg—the winery practices low yields, hand-harvesting, and spontaneous fermentation in traditional wooden casks.
