The Wiltinger Gottesfuss—translating to the 'Foot of God'—is one of the Saar's most legendary and steepest grand cru vineyards. Characterized by its dramatic, near-vertical slope and iron-rich red Devonian slate soils, this vineyard yields wines of singular intensity and wild, spicy character. Van Volxem's 'Alte Reben' (old vines) bottling from this site is sourced from extremely old, partially ungrafted Riesling vines, some of which are over a century old. These ancient vines naturally produce minuscule yields of highly concentrated grapes. In the cellar, Roman Niewodniczanski adheres to traditional, minimalist winemaking, utilizing spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in large, neutral oak fuder casks. The resulting wine is a masterclass in tension, balancing a rich, textured palate of ripe stone fruits and exotic spices with the vibrant, electric acidity and profound smoky minerality that defines the Saar.

With viticultural roots reaching back to Roman antiquity and an 18th-century Jesuit monastery, Weingut Van Volxem is a historic estate situated in Wiltingen along the steep slopes of the Saar in Germany's Mosel region. The estate experienced a dramatic renaissance when Roman Niewodniczanski acquired it in 1999, dedicating the estate to restoring the Saar's historic reputation for world-class, dry-style wines crafted with artisanal precision.
