The Wiltinger Kupp is one of the Saar's most legendary steep-slope vineyards, characterized by its dramatic amphitheater shape and iron-rich red Devonian slate soils. Van Volxem's expression of this historic site pays homage to the golden era of Saar wines in the late 19th century, when these Rieslings fetched prices higher than first-growth Bordeaux. The vineyard's unique microclimate, combined with cool Saar breezes, allows for an exceptionally long growing season. In the cellar, Roman Niewodniczanski adheres to traditional methods: hand-harvesting late in the season, utilizing spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and aging the wine in traditional, large oak fuder casks. This minimal-intervention approach coaxes a profound, mineral-driven complexity from the ancient vines, resulting in a Riesling that seamlessly balances rich, textured stone fruit flavors with a vibrant, electric acidity and a distinct smoky, flinty finish.

With viticultural roots reaching back to Roman antiquity and an 18th-century Jesuit monastery, Weingut Van Volxem is a historic estate situated in Wiltingen along the steep slopes of the Saar in Germany's Mosel region. The estate experienced a dramatic renaissance when Roman Niewodniczanski acquired it in 1999, dedicating the estate to restoring the Saar's historic reputation for world-class, dry-style wines crafted with artisanal precision. Working with venerable old vines across premier Grand Cru terroirs—including iconic sites like Scharzhofberger, Wiltinger Gottesfuss, and Kanzemer Altenberg—the winery practices low yields, hand-harvesting, and spontaneous fermentation in traditional wooden casks.
