The 2012 growing season in Burgundy proved exceptionally demanding, disrupted by severe spring frost, persistent summer downpours, and intense hail episodes that drastically reduced yields across the Côte d'Or. Warm, radiant sunshine finally arrived in mid-August and persisted through the September harvest, allowing the surviving low-crop clusters to achieve complete phenolic maturity while retaining firm, site-reflective acidity. Despite the harrowing viticultural year, the finished reds display notable concentration, vivid primary red fruit, and dense yet refined tannic structures. Entering 2026, the 2012 vintage represents a classic, highly regarded cellar vintage that has entered its optimal drinking window and will easily sustain development over the next decade.

🍾 About the Producer
Bodegas Vega Sicilia stands as Spain's undisputed viticultural grand cru, established in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves and owned by the Álvarez family since 1982. Anchored along the banks of the Duero River in Valbuena de Duero, the estate spans roughly 1,000 hectares, with 210 hectares of vineyard plots situated at elevations of 700 to 800 meters. The terroir is defined by a complex mosaic of chalky limestone, alluvial gravel, and clay soils exposed to extreme diurnal temperature swings. Guided by viticultural director Enrique Macías and technical director Gonzalo Iturriaga de Juan, farming is conducted organically and sustainably, with strict dry farming and plot-by-plot harvesting. Winemaking is legendary for its patience: wines are aged for years across bespoke French and American oak coopered in-house, followed by extensive bottle cellarage. Benchmark expressions include the multi-vintage masterwork Reserva Especial, the venerable and long-lived flagship Único, and the vibrant five-year-aged Valbuena 5°.
