✨ Technical Specifications
Hailing from the steep, wind-swept slopes of the iconic Rock of Vergisson in the Mâconnais region of Burgundy, 'Sur la Roche' (literally 'on the rock') is a masterclass in mineral-driven Chardonnay. The vineyard is situated at a high elevation where the soil is remarkably thin, consisting of hard limestone and fossilized shells. This extreme terroir forces the vines to dig deep, resulting in a white Burgundy of immense tension, saline minerality, and chiseled citrus fruit. Maison Verget, under the guiding philosophy of Jean-Marie Guffens, vinifies this fruit with absolute precision, utilizing gentle pressing and careful aging in a combination of concrete eggs, foudres, or older oak barrels to preserve the pristine, crystalline purity of the site without masking it in heavy wood. The Rock of Vergisson itself carries prehistoric significance, having served as a hunting site and landmark for millennia, lending an ancient, mystical heritage to this exceptional cuvée.
🍾 About the Producer
Established in 1990 by Flemish iconoclast Jean-Marie Guffens and Maine Heynen, Maison Verget fundamentally revolutionized Burgundian négociant conventions. Rather than purchasing unfermented must or finished bulk wine, Guffens partnered with select growers across the Mâconnais, Côte d'Or, and Chablis to hand-harvest immaculate whole clusters directly. Headquartered in Sologny, the cellar operates in synergy with Guffens' artisanal domaine holdings, with winemaking spearheaded alongside Julien Desplans since 2006. Viticultural sourcing emphasizes high-altitude, limestone-dominated parcels rooted in argilo-calcaire clays and Jurassic strata. Vinification prioritizes gentle pressing, wild-yeast fermentations, disciplined lees stirring, and finely judged wood regimens using restrained proportions of new French oak alongside stainless steel and horizontal barrels. Benchmark cuvées like Mâcon-Villages Terres de Pierres, Saint-Véran Terroirs de Davayé, and single-climat Pouilly-Fuissés exemplify Verget's hallmark tension: crystalline mineral purity, electric acidity, and profound textural depth.
