Villa Maria, a pioneer of New Zealand winemaking founded in 1961, showcases its innovative spirit with the Braided Gravels Albariño. While Albariño is historically rooted in the green, maritime hills of Galicia, Spain, it has found an exceptional southern home in Hawke's Bay. The name 'Braided Gravels' pays homage to the ancient, shifting paths of the Ngaruroro River, which left behind deep deposits of free-draining river stones. These unique soils act as thermal mass, absorbing the intense daytime sun and radiating warmth back to the low-yielding vines during the cool nights. This dramatic diurnal temperature swing, combined with maritime breezes, allows the Albariño grapes to develop intense stone fruit and citrus aromatics while retaining a bracing, laser-like acidity. Fermented primarily in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve its pristine fruit character, the wine is often aged briefly on its fine lees to introduce a subtle, creamy texture that beautifully balances its signature salty, mineral-driven finish.

Villa Maria blev grundlagt i 1961 af Sir George Fistonich og står i dag som et af New Zealands mest anerkendte og banebrydende vinhuse.
