Villa Maria, founded in 1961 by Sir George Fistonich, stands as an icon of New Zealand's modern wine revolution. While Marlborough often steals the spotlight, the cool, wind-swept terraces of Wairarapa at the southern edge of the North Island offer an exceptional terroir for Riesling. Here, the combination of free-draining alluvial gravel soils, hot summer days, and cool nights allows the Riesling grape to ripen slowly, retaining its signature electric acidity. This single-varietal white wine is crafted predominantly in stainless steel to capture the absolute purity of the fruit. It weaves a vibrant aromatic tapestry of lime zest, green apple, and white spring blossoms, underpinned by a distinct stony minerality that reflects the ancient riverbeds of the region.

Villa Maria blev grundlagt i 1961 af Sir George Fistonich og har udviklet sig fra en beskeden, lejet parcel på to hektar i Māngere, Auckland, til en af New Zealands mest toneangivende vininstitutioner. Vingården blev overtaget af Indevin Group i 2021 og viderefører sit stolte virke med stor regional og stilistisk spændvidde, hvor druematerialet hentes fra fremragende mikroklimaer i Marlborough, Hawke's Bay, Gisborne og Auckland. Markarbejdet tager afsæt i en dyb respekt for miljøet, og huset er grundlæggende medlem af Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand, hvilket suppleres af dedikerede økologiske parceller. Porteføljen er inddelt i serier lige fra de umiddelbart tilgængelige Private Bin- og Cellar Selection-vine til enkeltmarksvine som Seaspray og Southern Clays Sauvignon Blanc samt lagringsværdige Bordeaux-blends fra Gimblett Gravels og ambitiøse enkeltmarks-Chardonnays. I vinkælderen forener ønologerne moderne temperaturstyret gæring på rustfri ståltanke – der bevarer den rene, aromatiske friskhed – med veldoseret lagring på franske egetræsfade og bærmekontakt for at skabe vine med stor teksturmæssig dybde og knivskarp terroirpræcision.
