Hailing from the limestone-rich slopes of Gundersheim, a neighboring village to Westhofen in the Wonnegau district of Rheinhessen, this village-level (Ortswein) Riesling showcases the cooler, high-altitude terroir of the region. Sourced primarily from the steep, wind-swept parcels of the Höllenbrand vineyard, the vines dig deep into heavy clay-marl and massive limestone beds. This unique geology imparts a distinct, chalky tension and vibrant acidity to the wine. Crafted under strict biodynamic principles, the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in traditional, large neutral oak casks. This minimal-intervention approach allows the cool-climate energy and intense mineral drive of Gundersheim to shine through, offering a structured, deeply textured expression of dry German Riesling.

With viticultural heritage in Westhofen dating back to 1663, Weingut Wittmann is one of Germany's most influential pioneers of organic and biodynamic viticulture in the Wonnegau sub-region of Rheinhessen. Under the visionary leadership of Philipp Wittmann, alongside his family, the estate transitioned to organic farming in 1990 and achieved full biodynamic certification in 2004.
