Hailing from the sun-drenched, limestone-rich slopes of Westhofen in the Rheinhessen, Wittmann's 'vom Kalkstein' Riesling is a masterclass in soil-driven winemaking. The name translates literally to 'from limestone,' paying homage to the ancient, marine-deposited coral reefs that form the bedrock of this region. Sourced from estate vineyards dominated by active lime and terra rossa soils, this dry Riesling is fermented using indigenous yeasts in traditional, large neutral oak casks within the estate's historic 1829 vaulted cellar. This patient, biodynamic approach coaxes out a profound, chalky minerality, vibrant citrus zest, and a signature salty finish that beautifully captures the tension and purity of its unique terroir.

Weingut Wittmann har rødder i Westhofen helt tilbage til 1663 og regnes i dag blandt Tysklands mest indflydelsesrige pionerer inden for økologisk og biodynamisk vinbrug i Wonnegau-området i Rheinhessen. Under visionær ledelse af Philipp Wittmann og hans familie omlagde vinhuset til økologisk dyrkning i 1990 og opnåede fuld biodynamisk certificering i 2004. Wittmanns filosofi bygger på kompromisløs pleje af vinmarkerne, spontangæring med det naturlige gær og lagring på traditionelle, neutrale egetræsfade for at give det reneste udtryk for det kalkrige terroir på legendariske VDP.Grosse Lage-marker som Morstein, Kirchspiel, Aulerde og Brunnenhäuschen. Vingården er verdensberømt for sine skelsættende tørre Grosses Gewächs-Rieslinger, der brillerer med krystalklar præcision, spændstighed og kalket mineralitet, men mestrer i lige så høj grad exceptionelle ædelsøde botrytis-vine samt elegante Pinot Noir-vine.
