The Scheurebe grape holds a unique place in German viticulture, having been bred in 1916 by the legendary viticulturist Dr. Georg Scheu, who sought a variety that could withstand the harsh cool-climate conditions while delivering intense aromatics. Historically known as Sämling 88, it was long used for sweet wines, but in the hands of the biodynamic pioneers at Weingut Wittmann, it is transformed into a sophisticated, bone-dry masterpiece. Sourced from the limestone-rich soils of Westhofen in the Rheinhessen, this dry expression tames the grape's wild, exotic nature with a precise, stony minerality. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, it pays homage to local heritage while showcasing a modern, terroir-driven side of this aromatic grape, bursting with notes of cassis, grapefruit, and fresh garden herbs.

With viticultural heritage in Westhofen dating back to 1663, Weingut Wittmann is one of Germany's most influential pioneers of organic and biodynamic viticulture in the Wonnegau sub-region of Rheinhessen. Under the visionary leadership of Philipp Wittmann, alongside his family, the estate transitioned to organic farming in 1990 and achieved full biodynamic certification in 2004.
