The Aulerde vineyard, first documented in 1380 under the name 'Oulart', is one of the oldest and warmest Grand Cru (Grosses Gewächs) sites in Westhofen. Situated at the foot of the rolling hills of the Rheinhessen, this south-facing vineyard is protected from cold winds, allowing the Riesling grapes to ripen earlier and more fully than in neighboring sites. The soil here is a complex mix of clayey silt, loess, and gravel, underlain by ancient limestone. This unique terroir yields a Riesling of remarkable opulence and power, balancing lush yellow stone fruit aromas with a vibrant, salty minerality. Fermented with indigenous yeasts in large, neutral oak casks in Wittmann's historic cellar, the Westhofener Aulerde GG is a masterclass in tension, combining rich texture with a precise, driving acidity.
🍾 wine.about_producer
With a winegrowing heritage in the Rheinhessen village of Westhofen dating back to 1663, Weingut Wittmann is a pioneering force in German biodynamic viticulture, having committed to organic practices in 1990 and biodynamics in 2004. Managed today by Philipp Wittmann alongside his family, the estate is globally revered for its precise, terroir-driven dry Rieslings sourced from legendary Grosses Gewächs sites like Morstein, Kirchspiel, and Aulerde. In their historic vaulted cellar built in 1829, the wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in traditional large oak casks, resulting in structured, mineral-rich expressions of outstanding longevity.
