Xavier Vignon's Arcane series is a playground of oenological creativity, and 'V Le Pape' (The Pope) pays homage both to the historic papal seat of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the fifth card of the Tarot deck. Crafted from centenarian Grenache vines spread across diverse terroirs—including Urgonian limestone, sandy soils, and quartzite pebbles—this cuvée represents a masterclass in Southern Rhône complexity. To preserve the vibrant, primary fruit of these ancient vines while imparting structure, Vignon utilizes a revolutionary aging technique: maturing the wine in small oak barrels that are entirely submerged in concrete tanks filled with wine. This ingenious method eliminates oxygen contact, resulting in a remarkably fresh, intensely concentrated, and velvety expression of Châteauneuf-du-Pape that defies traditional aging boundaries.
