Historically, the venerable Bristol merchant Averys played a pioneering role in the curation of fine Burgundy, frequently sourcing exceptional barrels directly from the region's most prestigious Grand Cru vineyards to be bottled under their own historic label. During the golden age of merchant bottling in the mid-to-late 20th century, Ronald and John Avery forged deep personal relationships with legendary Burgundian growers. These red Grand Cru bottlings—sourced from iconic climats along the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune—represent the pinnacle of Pinot Noir. Crafted from low-yielding, ancient vines grown on complex limestone and clay soils, these wines were traditionally aged in French oak casks. They are celebrated for their profound aromatic complexity, structure, and capacity to develop rich forest floor, truffle, and dried cherry characters over decades in the cellar.

Established in Bristol in 1793, Averys is one of the United Kingdom's oldest and most historic independent wine merchants and négociant houses. Throughout the twentieth century, under the visionary leadership of Ronald Avery and subsequently his son John Avery MW, the firm cemented an international reputation as an adventurous pioneer. Averys was among the very first British merchants to champion Bordeaux's Right Bank estates—introducing Château Pétrus to the UK market—and broke early ground importing nascent New World benchmarks from California and Australia.
