Founded in 1970 in the Hunter Valley, Brokenwood has long championed single-vineyard expression. Because the heavy clay soils of the historic Graveyard Vineyard—originally designated as a town cemetery but never used as one—are uniquely suited to Shiraz, Brokenwood's premium Chardonnay program focuses on other exceptional terroirs, such as the sandy loams of the Belford Vineyard in the Hunter Valley and cooler high-altitude sites in Beechworth and Orange. Established in 1970 by Sydney lawyers Tony Albert, John Beeston, and acclaimed wine critic James Halliday, Brokenwood Wines began on a modest 10-acre block in Pokolbin within the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. Guided for decades by veteran managing director and chief winemaker Iain Riggs, the estate evolved from a passionate weekend venture into one of Australia's most prestigious and benchmark wine producers.
