Perched on the dizzyingly steep slopes of the Mosel, the Pündericher Marienburg vineyard is a geological mosaic, and its 'Rothenpfad' (red path) parcel is its most dramatic red-slate crown jewel. While the Mosel is famous for blue and grey slate, this south-facing amphitheater is rich in iron-bearing red slate, which absorbs the sun's heat and imparts a distinctively warm, exotic, and wild-herb character to the grapes. Guided by the biodynamic pioneer Clemens Busch, this Grosses Gewächs (GG) Riesling is crafted with minimal intervention. The hand-harvested fruit undergoes spontaneous fermentation in traditional, neutral oak Fuder casks, resting on its lees to develop a deep, texturally complex profile. The resulting wine is a masterclass in tension, balancing fiery mineral drive with opulent stone fruit and a lingering, smoky finish.
🍾 wine.about_producer
Located in the picturesque village of Pünderich in the Mosel region of Germany, Weingut Clemens Busch is a pioneering estate globally renowned for redefining Mosel Riesling through biodynamic viticulture. Clemens and Rita Busch took over the family estate in 1984, championing organic methods since 1986 and biodynamics since 2005 as members of Respekt Biodyn. The winery's production is deeply tied to the steep slopes of the Pündericher Marienburg vineyard, where they meticulously isolate parcels based on grey, red, and blue slate soils. Utilizing traditional large oak Fuder casks, spontaneous fermentation, and extended lees contact, they craft exceptionally precise, terroir-driven Rieslings, from bone-dry Grosses Gewächs expressions like Rothenpfad and Falkenlay to exquisitely concentrated noble sweet Auslese wines.
