The Rangen de Thann is Alsace's southernmost Grand Cru, famous for its dizzyingly steep 70-degree slopes and unique volcanic soils. Within this legendary site lies the Clos Saint Urbain, a historic vineyard named after the patron saint of vintners, whose chapel sits amidst the vines. Here, the Riesling vines must dig deep into the dark, heat-retaining volcanic tufa and sedimentary rock. The proximity of the Thur river provides a microclimate that tempers the extreme conditions.
