The Rangen de Thann is Alsace's southernmost Grand Cru, famous for its dizzyingly steep 70-degree slopes and unique volcanic soils. Within this legendary site lies the Clos Saint Urbain, a historic vineyard named after the patron saint of vintners, whose chapel sits amidst the vines. Here, the Riesling vines must dig deep into the dark, heat-retaining volcanic tufa and sedimentary rock. The proximity of the Thur river provides a microclimate that tempers the extreme conditions. Domaine Zind Humbrecht crafts this wine with meticulous biodynamic care and slow, natural fermentations. The result is a Riesling of extraordinary power, characterized by a profound, smoky minerality, intense flinty notes, and a searing, structured acidity that reflects its dramatic, fiery origin.
🍾 About the Producer
Domaine Zind Humbrecht was established in 1959 through the merger of two historic Alsatian winemaking families whose viticultural heritage dates back to 1620. Located in Turckheim in the heart of Alsace, the estate gained international renown under the stewardship of Léonard Humbrecht and subsequently his son Olivier Humbrecht, France's first Master of Wine. A pioneer in organic and biodynamic viticulture, the domaine strictly crafts terroir-driven white wines with minimal intervention from legendary Grand Cru and lieu-dit sites such as Rangen de Thann, Clos Windsbuhl, and Hengst. They are celebrated globally for their extraordinarily concentrated, mineral-rich expressions of Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer, ranging from impeccably balanced dry wines to opulent Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles.
