Perched high above the historic village of Hunawihr, the Clos Windsbuhl is one of Alsace's most legendary vineyards, boasting a heritage that dates back to the 14th century when it was owned by the Habsburgs. Acquired by the Humbrecht family in 1987, this south-to-southeast-facing site sits on a base of Muschelkalk (shell limestone) which imparts a distinct, vibrant acidity and mineral tension to the naturally opulent Gewurztraminer grape. Unlike warmer sites, the high altitude and cooler microclimate of Windsbuhl allow for a slow ripening process, preserving freshness and structure. Fermented slowly with indigenous yeasts and aged on its lees, this wine is celebrated for its aromatic complexity, showcasing notes of exotic fruits, rose petals, and subtle spices, balanced by a precise, limestone-driven backbone.
🍾 About the Producer
Domaine Zind Humbrecht was established in 1959 through the merger of two historic Alsatian winemaking families whose viticultural heritage dates back to 1620. Located in Turckheim in the heart of Alsace, the estate gained international renown under the stewardship of Léonard Humbrecht and subsequently his son Olivier Humbrecht, France's first Master of Wine. A pioneer in organic and biodynamic viticulture, the domaine strictly crafts terroir-driven white wines with minimal intervention from legendary Grand Cru and lieu-dit sites such as Rangen de Thann, Clos Windsbuhl, and Hengst. They are celebrated globally for their extraordinarily concentrated, mineral-rich expressions of Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer, ranging from impeccably balanced dry wines to opulent Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles.
