The Erdener Prälat is widely regarded as one of the greatest vineyards in the Mosel valley, if not all of Germany. This tiny, four-acre site is a perfect south-facing amphitheater of weathered red slate, hugged by massive cliffs that trap the sun's heat to create an exceptionally warm microclimate. Legend has it that the vineyard was named after the high-ranking church prelates who historically claimed its sublime wines for their own tables. Weingut Dr. Loosen stands as one of the preeminent global ambassadors of Germany's Mittelmosel. Under family ownership for more than two centuries, the estate experienced an epochal renaissance after Ernst 'Erni' Loosen assumed leadership in 1988. Loosen immediately implemented draconian yield restrictions, prohibited chemical fertilizers, and embraced spontaneous fermentations in neutral oak Fuder casks, frequently practicing extended lees contact.
