✨ Technical Specifications
The Erdener Prälat is widely regarded as one of the greatest vineyards in the Mosel valley, if not all of Germany. This tiny, four-acre site is a perfect south-facing amphitheater of weathered red slate, hugged by massive cliffs that trap the sun's heat to create an exceptionally warm microclimate. Legend has it that the vineyard was named after the high-ranking church prelates who historically claimed its sublime wines for their own tables. Dr. Loosen's Erdener Prälat Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel is a masterpiece of extreme selection, crafted only in exceptional years from grapes heavily affected by noble rot. Fermented with indigenous yeasts in traditional oak Fuder casks, this 100% Riesling balances opulent, honeyed sweetness with a fierce, crystalline acidity and a distinct, smoky red-slate minerality. The 'Goldkapsel' (Gold Capsule) designation indicates a bottling of particularly high concentration and richness, representing the pinnacle of the Auslese style.
🍾 About the Producer
The historic Dr. Loosen estate has been in the Loosen family for over two centuries, situated along the dramatic, slate-lined slopes of the Middle Mosel in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany. Since taking over management in 1988, Ernst Loosen has revitalized the winery by strictly focusing on low yields, meticulous vineyard stewardship, and minimal intervention in the cellar. The estate is blessed with extraordinarily old, ungrafted Riesling vines in legendary Grand Cru (Grosse Lage) vineyards such as Erdener Prälat, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and Bernkasteler Lay. Dr. Loosen is globally celebrated for producing pure, expressive, and age-worthy Rieslings that range from vibrant dry bottlings to lusciously complex, mineral-laced Prädikat and dessert wines.
