Ernst Loosen's family has been cultivating vines in the Mosel for over two centuries. The Ürziger Würzgarten, or 'spice garden of Ürzig,' is one of the region's most dramatic and legendary vineyards. Rising like a colossal amphitheater of red volcanic soil and slate, its unique terroir stands in stark contrast to the blue slate of the surrounding villages. This volcanic soil infuses the 100% Riesling vines—many of which are ungrafted and over a century old—with an unmistakable exotic, spicy character. The 'Auslese' designation signifies a harvest of selectively picked, overripe grapes, often touched by noble rot. This results in a luscious, naturally sweet wine balanced by a vibrant, electric acidity that is characteristic of the Mosel's cool-climate viticulture. The historic Dr. Loosen estate has been in the Loosen family for over two centuries, situated along the dramatic, slate-lined slopes of the Middle Mosel in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany. Since taking over management in 1988, Ernst Loosen has revitalized the winery by strictly focusing on low yields, meticulous vineyard stewardship, and minimal intervention in the cellar. The estate is blessed with extraordinarily old, ungrafted Riesling vines in legendary Grand Cru (Grosse Lage) vineyards such as Erdener Prälat, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and Bernkasteler Lay.
