Egon Müller’s Scharzhofberg is the undisputed crown jewel of the Saar, a legendary vineyard whose history stretches back to monastic cultivation in the Middle Ages. Purchased by the Müller family in 1797, this estate produces some of the world's most coveted white wines. The Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 'Versteigerung' (Auction) is an ultra-rare, botrytized masterpiece crafted only in exceptional vintages and sold exclusively at the annual VDP auction in Trier. Grown on steep, weathered grey Devonian slate slopes, the ancient, often ungrafted Riesling vines yield fruit of astonishing concentration. The winemaking is traditional and minimalist, utilizing old oak Fuder casks to let the natural tension between vibrant, electric Saar acidity and rich, honeyed botrytis express itself fully. Weingut Egon Müller-Scharzhof, established in 1797 following the secularization of monastic holdings along the Saar, stands as a paragon of classical German viticulture. Situated in Wiltingen within the cooler Mosel tributary corridor, the estate centers upon the world-renowned Scharzhofberg and Le Gallais' monopole parcel in Wiltinger Braune Kupp. These south-facing, steep amphitheaters feature weathered Devonian grey and red slate interspersed with quartzite and iron-rich veins. Viticulture follows traditional, sustainable principles emphasizing rigorous plow cultivation, absence of chemical fertilizers or herbicides, low yields, and preservation of centenarian ungrafted vines.
